Kim and Marou Gloria left banking to cook for Marikina. They opened Miguel & Maria on Lilac Street so the city could have the casual comfort food they missed, in big servings and at a fair price.
There is no feeling more comforting than the dining room, they say. Welcome home. Comedor, their Filipino room on Gil Fernando, keeps the same hospitality and changes the plate.
Kim and Marou Gloria, Marikeños and former bankers, opened the first dining room on Lilac Street so the neighborhood could have casual comfort food in generous portions, at a fair price. It is still the room people mean when they say Miguel & Maria.
The kitchen
The menu is home cooking with a Western table: ribs, salmon, mac and cheese, burgers, and breakfast that runs past noon. Recipes were worked out with friends, then kept because people came back for them.
The dining room
Wood tables, a garden path, and room enough for a birthday or a Tuesday lunch. Comedor, on Gil Fernando, adds modern Filipino plates and a Friday folk set. Both rooms take private gatherings.
On the plate
Baby back ribs with java rice, baked salmon under three cheeses, a skillet of mac and cheese, and Miguel’s platter when the table is full. Comfort food, meant to be shared.
